Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT)

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) understands recurring cycles through emotion and attachment needs. Negative interaction cycles are mapped; underlying needs and secure bonding are rebuilt. It does not diagnose.

Concepts include pursue–withdraw, freeze positions, emotion access, and re-engagement interventions. The therapist interrupts cycles live and supports emotional safety.

Both partners' voices matter; speaker separation is critical for accurate reading.

Not a substitute for individual care; safety first when violence, coercion, or active substance dominance appears.

No automated diagnosis or legal decisions.

In PsychSupervisor, EFCT presents cycle, emotion, and attachment themes under the five standard report headings as decision support.

How it appears in the app

In PsychSupervisor you choose Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) as the theoretical frame when opening a case; the session transcript is read through that lens. The report is organised under five standard headings: Session Overview Summary, Developmental Assessment, Session Evaluation, Theory-Based Evaluation of Therapist Interventions, and Recommended Therapy Plan. After speaker roles are assigned, text is structured in the selected approach; couple and family approach headings are written as narrative text drawn from the transcript, and every session also gets a separate risk screen that flags transcript wording. This approach is for two-person couple files; family files with three or more people or a child use Systemic Family and Couple Therapy. Outputs support supervision and record-keeping as clinical decision support; they do not assign diagnoses, prescribe medication, or replace emergency care. The clinician verifies the transcript and retains final clinical judgment.
